Side Effects of Antidiabetic Drug

Side effect is an unwanted issue that is caused by a medicine. Diabetes medication unfortunately includes common side effects such as nausea or an upset stomach. Often in the case of diabetes drugs like Metformin, the side effects will only be temporary.

Potential side effects of diabetes drug


1. Sulfonylureas: The primary side effect is hypoglycemia and minor skin allergy and also low blood sugar, skin rash, upset stomach and weight gain.
2. Meglitinides: The primary side effect is hypoglycemia and minor symptoms are skin rash or itching, gastro-intestinal upset, low blood sugar and weight gain
3. Thiazolidinediones: The medication may cause fluid retention, anaemia risk, edema or weight gain, risk of liver disease, swelling of legs and ankles. 
4. Biguanides: The side effect is lactic acidosis, especially using for those who were comorbid with obvious heart failure or liver/renal function impairment. The minor side effects are nausea, diarrhea and gastro-intestinal upset. Also, kidney complications, tiredness or dizziness are observed sometimes.
5. Alpha-glucosidase inhibitors: The serious side effect is liver function impairment and the less annoying side effects are flatulence or diarrhea, gas, bloating.

May cause side effects such as swelling (edema) or Fluid retention.
DPP-4 Inhibitors
Sitagliptin
Saxagliptin
Linagliptin
Stomach discomfort, diarrhea, sore throat, stuffy nose, upper respiratory infection.
Do not cause low blood glucose.
Alpha-glucosidase Inhibitors
Acarbose
Miglitol

Gas, diarrhea, upset stomach, abdominal pain
Bile Acid Sequestrants
Colesevelam
Constipation, nausea, diarrhea, gas, heartburn, headache (may interact with glyburide, levothyroxine and contraceptives)
